Event Categories:

A free workshop for teachers in the Stimulating Physics Network’s early career mentoring programme.

Aircraft, rockets and birds all demonstrate the truth of Newton’s Laws of Motion. The physics of flight is a great context in which to teach forces, whether in the classroom or during a school visit.

Join us for an afternoon at the RAF Museum to review the physics of flight. Try out some practical work, some maths, take a look through notes you could adapt for lessons and enjoy a  walk around the exhibits to see how the concepts have been put into practice over the years.

Programme

12:30: registration, buffet lunch in the ‘Cold War’ hangar.
13:00: chalk, talk and flying darts, in the Cold War lecture theatre. There will be handouts, but no test!
13:40: guided tour of relevant exhibits.
14:40: opportunity to see other exhibits, and to plan your school visit itinerary.
15:40: tea and talk, in the lecture theatre.
16:00: close.

Directions

The Museum is beside the M54, which leaves the M6 close to Wolverhampton. Cosford has its own railway station, with trains from Wolverhampton and Birmingham. The nearest bus stop is 1 mile away, and the Museum is on cycle route 81.

For more on road and rail links, see:

There are two possible satnav postcodes:

“Please note, not all systems recognise our postcode of TF11 8UP. Please use WV7 3EU as an alternative and follow museum signs.”

Things to note

There is no admission fee for the museum, only a small parking charge.

Whilst there is no charge for this event, it will cost us (the IOP) money to provide. We would be grateful for early notice if you have to cancel.
