Join the IOP Wales team on Monday 15 March at 6pm to discuss ways of teaching this topic and to share ideas with colleagues from across Wales.
We will present ways of explaining the concepts of the random nature of radioactive decay and particularly half-life, something which many students find difficulty with. We will explore practical models using ‘Lego’, ‘dice’ and the ‘leaky water bottle’ to plot decay curves and use them to determine the half-lives of radioactive materials. We will help weave a story which explains uses of different radioactive materials, based on the type of radiation they emit and their half-life. Join us on an exploration of the required physics and the maths of radioactive decay. To complement the session, full supporting notes and resource list will be provided to attendees.
All are welcome e.g. Teachers (physics specialists and non-specialists), NQT’s etc. and it is a good opportunity to see what other teachers are doing in these unusual times.
Booking is essential . We hope to see you there.
