Event Information

Event categories:

This session is aimed at teachers delivering, or expecting to deliver “Radioactivity” topics at KS4 or 5 in the future, as well as interested Technicians. The objective is to boost the confidence of teachers delivering aspects of Nuclear & Atomic Physics at GCSE, in several ways: in using the radioactive materials their school holds in a safe and effective way, in developing the student’s intuitive yet abstract model of the nucleus, and in enhancing the student’s grasp of the mathematics of half-life and decay. We will cover the safety precautions and their purposes, as well as the importance of demonstrations in an inter-active and hands-on way. We will also discuss overcoming common misconceptions, and share some of the best on-line videos and software to enrich teaching.

Hot drinks & nibbles available from 4:15 for a 4:30 start, expecting to be all wrapped up by 5:45

This event is a Stimulating Physics Network Link+ event, led by Richard Barry of Ivybridge Community College.
