Teacher CPD at Lancaster University: Teaching Magnetic Fields using Space and Planetary Physics (June 21st)

To give Physics teachers the opportunity to develop their understanding of physics concepts through discussion with Physics researchers. This new knowledge and understanding is then shared with their students while teaching the curriculum in more innovative and exciting ways.
Lancaster University Physics Department is at the fore front of research into Space and Planetary Physics.
Researchers will inform how magnetic fields can be used to learnabout the planets their moons and space weather. Teaching resources will be created during the day for use in the classroom when teaching about magnetic fields.

14.00 – 16.00 finish projects and preparing teaching resources

Research Overview: Magnetospheric and auroral dynamics in the solar system. Diagnosing the transfer of energy from the Sun to planetary environments. Use of Cassini spacecraft in situ and remote sensing data at Saturn. Interpretation and comparison of auroral emissions at ultraviolet, infrared and radio wavelengths from the outer planets

Research OverviewPlanets are connected to their surrounding plasma environment by their planetary magnetic fields, which threads the atmosphere and generates the magnetosphere. This interaction generates bright auroral signatures.. I am interested in the auroral acceleration region, auroral current systems, and the effect of the upper atmosphere on the magnetosphere.
