My first post on talkphysics! I’d love to say that the gender gap could be narrowed by having more female teachers like us, but I’ve just come from a dept of 7 physicists, 4 of whom were women (yes, an independent school!). Still, we only had about 25% girls doing A level and quite a few of those were new into the 6th form from girls’ schools. I wonder if girls see us teaching and think – hmm I can aim higher than that…?? or whether a good-looking bloke is more likely to attract them into physics than a female role model? Ooh, controversial!
