I had been struggling to understand the explanation of the behaviour of the bouncing balls and Astroblaster toy. Given that energy and momentum does not cause things to happen, I felt I should have been able to construct an explanation in terms of force, but all my attempts failed to explain how what appeared to be a time-symmetric situation leads to one ball flying away with a much increased speed!
What about a table tennis ball on a beaker of water. (Polystyrene beaker for obvious reasons) The table tennis ball shoots off when the beaker is dropped onto a bench.
