      I mentioned the SCORE (Science Community Representing Education – ASE, IOP, Royal Society, RSC, Society of Biology) report on benchmarks for planning staffing and lab resources.  I would commend this to all science teachers and techs.  The report and its accompanying spreadsheet can be found via the links at:


      At the very least, there is a useful spreadsheet against which to catalogue your own lab equipment.  From that can flow an analysis of the most significant deficiencies in your inventory.  Setting these in priority order and pricing them up could be the basis for annual budget bids and spending plans.  If you are planning new or refurbished labs, there is advice on those.  And then there is the small matter of having an appropriate number of trained technicians …..
