We have got to that time in our AS course when we teach the independence of horizontal and vertical motion.
The students get a build up about the shooting of the Monkey.

We have two orientations for the monkey depending on how brave you feel in setting the demonstration up. Both the monkey and the gun have to be horizontally at the same height.

      Two monkeys

With the monkey on the left you fire into the tin. The old bean tin makes an excellent noise when the steel ball bearing hits the can. Tin is is attracted to the solenoid. We have also put a bolt from inside the tin so it projects out enough to extend inside the solenoid.

The launcher is made mainly from an old dynamics trolley.

This is such a  great demonstration! There is a good video of the set up and demo here.
