Hi Dom there is a lot of old equipment you can find for sale. I am not sure how often PAT testing is done in schools. Any second hand equipment I have purchased has just been laid out with everything else when the PAT testing is being done.

Hi Maria, For identical cells like your 12V ones the voltage would be 12V. Cells might be put together in parallel so that less current passes through each cells internal resistance and the cells last longer
You can show infra red using most mobile phones. Normally if you look at the LED at the end of a TV remote you see nothing. The remote communicates with the TV using infra red. If you point a TV remote at many different mobile phones the students will see the LED light up as the phones CCD responds to the infra red signal
